How to read this page
- What is shown
- Each element is the one running at sunrise, with the instant it ends. Where a second begins before the next sunrise it is listed under the first, because an element that ends soon after dawn governs almost none of the day that follows it.
- Which clock
- Every time here is on the clock of the anchor selected above, and every anchor is a city, not a country. Sunrise moves with longitude — roughly four minutes for every degree east or west — and Rahu Kaal, Abhijit and the Choghadiya are all divisions of the span between sunrise and sunset, so they move with it too. A panchang computed for your own town will differ, and by more than a rounding.
- Sources
- Positions of the Sun and Moon come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source implementation of standard astronomical models. Nakshatra and yoga use the Lahiri ayanamsa. A hand-checked table of published panchang days across five regions and several years is re-verified on every build, and the build is refused if any disagree.
- Months and years
- The month is amanta — new moon to new moon. Vikram and Shaka Samvat both turn at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, in March or April. The Gujarati Vikram Samvat turns at Kartika Shukla Pratipada instead, around Diwali, so if that is your reckoning the year given here will be one ahead of yours for part of the year.
- The traditional windows
- Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika, Abhijit and the Choghadiya are recorded here as what is customarily observed. They are divisions of the daylight span by weekday, not astronomical events, and nothing on this page is a claim about what any day will bring.
